France Suspends Pension Reform Until 2028

French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu announced that the controversial pension reform, which sought to raise the retirement age from 62 to 64, has been suspended until January 2028. Speaking to the National Assembly, Lecornu said the decision responds to union demands and will remain in effect until after the 2027 presidential elections. He stated the pause would cost France €400 million in 2026 and €1.8 billion in 2027, to be offset by austerity measures. Lecornu also announced plans for a “Retirement and Labor Conference” to discuss women’s retirement rights, working conditions, and the system’s future.
