Freezing temperatures in Bitlis province in eastern Türkiye have caused reeds along the shores of Lake Van to freeze, pushing waterbirds toward open waters. Ducks and other species were seen gathering in large flocks in the deeper, unfrozen parts of the lake.
Dr. Cihan Önen of the Anatolian Underwater Research and Sports Association said the scene highlights Lake Van’s importance as a winter habitat. The cold spell is expected to continue in the coming days.
