Gabriel Boric Becomes First South American Leader to Visit the South Pole

Chilean President Gabriel Boric traveled to the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station in South Antarctica with scientists and a large number of cabinet members, including members of the armed forces and some ministers, becoming the first South American leader to visit the South Pole.

“This is a milestone for us. This is the first time a Chilean president has come to the South Pole and spoken about Chile’s Antarctic mission,” said the Chilean leader, noting that his visit underlined Chile’s determination to play an important role in scientific projects, especially in areas related to climate change.

Previously visited only by the prime ministers of New Zealand and Norway, parts of Antarctica are claimed by many countries, including Chile, the United Kingdom, France, Norway, Australia, New Zealand and Argentina.
