Germany steps up energy saving measures amid Russian embargo

Germany, which imports the vast majority of its natural gas from Russia, is suffering as a result of the embargoes imposed on Russia. With the arrival of the winter season, Germany has begun to implement energy-saving measures in every possible area, and public buildings, universities, churches, and even the federal parliament can be heated to a maximum of 19 degrees, depending on the decisions made. This temperature could be even lower in some institutions.

The Bundestag’s electric kettles were turned off in 1,800 rooms. Hot water is only available in the toilets and communal tea/coffee areas. Blankets are distributed to congregations attending church services, especially during the cold first weeks of December. Many organizers and vendors at Christmas markets use less lighting. Most market lamps have been replaced with energy-saving LED bulbs. Again, the Christmas market lights are now an hour late and turn off an hour early.
