Gustavo Petro won the second round of presidential elections in Colombia, becoming the first left-wing head of state in the country’s history. According to the statement made by the Colombian National Electoral Council, Gustavo Petro received 50.51 percent of the vote, while his rival Rodolfo Hernandez received 47.22 percent of the votes.
Speaking after the election victory, Gustavo Petro stated that they will overcome slavery and feudalism in Colombia, and that they will also take care to protect nature. Expressing that a comprehensive peace will be initiated in the country as of August 7, 2022, Petro stated that they will respect the opposition and that there will be no political or legal persecution.
