Hafez al-Assad’s Name Removed from Damascus Mosque

The name of former Syrian President Hafez al-Assad, inscribed on a marble plaque at the historic Umayyad Mosque in Damascus, was removed by worshippers during Friday prayers.

Using a ladder and a hammer, Syrians chipped away the name from the mosque’s wall, symbolizing ongoing efforts to erase traces of the Assad regime in the country.
