Heat wave triggers forest fires across Mexico

Due to the heat wave that has been effective in Mexico in the last days, forest fires in the country have increased by 45 percent. While hundreds of cities were experiencing drought, 67,742 hectares of land were destroyed in 125 active forest fires, Mexico’s National Forestry Commission (Conafor) announced. Across the country, 3,492 firefighters are on duty in the fight against forest fires, helicopters and planes also support the fight, the commission added.

Forest fires that erupted near Saltillo in the north, forcing schools to close, are now 40 percent contained, with 900 hectares of forest turned to ash so far, reports stated.
