Heavy snowfall hits Iran, 880 stranded people rescued

Heavy snowfall affecting Eastern and Western provinces in Iran. Education was suspended due to heavy snowfall in Iran’s East and West Azerbaijan, Kurdistan, Erdebil, Zanjan, Kermanshah, Loristan, Ilam, Hamedan and Central provinces. Village roads were also closed to traffic in areas where snowfall was effective. In the statement made by the East Azerbaijan Governor’s Office, it was stated that 500 villages in the province were closed to transportation due to heavy snowfall and that efforts are continuing to open the village roads to transportation. In the province of Loristan, located in the south of the country, more than 700 village roads were closed to transportation after the snowfall. Mehdi Bazveki, Head of Loristan Crisis Administration, said, “The electricity was cut off in 36 villages. There is no contact left with these villages,”. During the cleaning carried out on the roof of the hospital in Senendaç city of Iran’s Kurdistan province, a snow mass fell on a person entering the hospital, the person died. Thirteen vehicles on the Hamedan-Melayir highway collided, 11 people were injured and the vehicles suffered heavy material damage.

In North Khorasan province, the Becnurd-Aşhane highway was completely closed to traffic due to heavy snowstorms. Rescue efforts have been initiated for the vehicles and their drivers stranded on the roads. 140 passengers are expected to be rescued on the closed road where the snow storm is seen intensely. 880 people who were stranded due to snowfall in the state so far were rescued by teams., authorities said.
