The poorly equipped 1970 model ambulance that transported Türkiye’s eighth President Turgut Özal on the day he died in 1993 is now being preserved by a private collector. Gürsev Gür purchased the vintage vehicle in 1999, only discovering its historical significance during a 2012 state investigation into Özal’s death. Recalling his surprise, Gür stated, “We didn’t buy it knowing it was the ambulance in which Özal had passed away.” He noted the vehicle’s complete lack of medical gear, adding, “Of course, it’s not an ambulance suitable for transporting the president at the time.” Today, the starkly bare vehicle serves as a sharp historical contrast to Türkiye’s modern emergency fleet of over 6,000 advanced land, air, and sea ambulances.
