Hong Kong Activists Sentenced in Security Case

A Hong Kong court sentenced 45 pro-democracy activists to 4–10 years in prison for alleged attempts to overthrow the government under the national security law. Benny Tai, a former law academic and key figure in the case, received the maximum 10-year sentence, while two others were acquitted.

The charges stem from a 2020 unofficial “primary election” aimed at selecting candidates for the Legislative Council. Authorities accused the activists of plotting to undermine the government. The case follows the detention of 47 activists in 2021.
