Hong Kong Court Jails Jimmy Lai for 20 Years

A Hong Kong court sentenced dissident media mogul Jimmy Lai to 20 years in prison under China’s national security law. Lai, founder of the now-defunct Apple Daily, was convicted of conspiring with foreign powers and publishing what authorities described as provocative material.

Judges said Lai was the “mastermind” behind efforts to seek sanctions and hostile actions from foreign countries against China. Lai, a British citizen detained since 2020 in Hong Kong, denied the charges and described himself as a political prisoner.
