Hundreds of thousands of dead fish found in Australia’s Darling River

A mass fish death occurred in the part of the Darling River in the town of Menindee in the Australian state of New South Wales (NSW). Hundreds of thousands of dead cod, gold perch, and silver perch were spotted in the river. Authorities said the deaths were caused by low oxygen levels in the water, along with high temperatures expected to rise above 40 degrees Celsius.

The number of the fish deaths this year exceeded the numbers recorded in 2018 and 2019, according to authorities. The NSW Department of Primary Industries said that they continue working on assessing the causes of the deaths.
