Hungarian Parliament Ratifies Sweden’s NATO Membership

The Hungarian parliament has given its resounding approval for Sweden to join NATO, with a decisive vote of 188 in favor and 6 against. This marks the removal of the final obstacle for Sweden to become the 32nd member of NATO. Following Turkey’s earlier approval in January, Hungary’s endorsement solidifies Sweden’s path to NATO membership. The vote faced resistance from six parliamentarians associated with the right-wing ‘Our Homeland Movement,’ who accused the Hungarian government of treason and claimed to be the sole political movement opposing what they deemed a potential catalyst for World War III. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, in advocating for Sweden’s NATO membership, emphasized its positive impact on Hungary’s security.
