The US Air Force’s 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron, known as the “Hurricane Hunters,” flew through Hurricane Melissa as it approached Jamaica to gather data for the National Hurricane Center.
Now classified as a Category 5 storm with winds reaching 282 km/h (170 mph), Melissa is expected to impact Jamaica before moving toward Cuba and the Bahamas, making it one of the most powerful storms of 2025.
