Hurricane Milton Death Toll Rises to 10 in Florida

The death toll from Hurricane Milton, which hit Florida as a Category 3 storm, has risen to 10, according to U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. Tornadoes triggered by the hurricane caused at least five deaths in the Spanish Lakes Communities, an area home to elderly residents in St. Lucie County. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis noted the state avoided a “worst-case scenario” but confirmed that 19 tornadoes were recorded on the day of the storm’s landfall. The National Weather Service reported a total of 45 tornadoes across central and eastern Florida. Residents sheltered during the storm have begun returning home. On the other hand, more than 3 million homes and businesses in Florida were without power as of this morning, according to PowerOutage.us.
