In Gaza, Tailors Turn to Pedaled Sewing Machines Amid Power Shortage

Due to ongoing electricity scarcity stemming from the Hamas-Israel conflict, Gaza’s tailors resort to manual pedaled sewing machines to sustain their livelihoods.

In Rafah, Mohammed Abu Jazar ingeniously repurposes his son’s bicycle wheel to power a sewing machine, providing an alternative to the electricity shortage. Abu Jazar explains, “I use this makeshift setup to meet customer demands, particularly during winter, when repairs for clothing and shoes are in high demand due to the rising number of displaced Gazans struggling with income limitations.”
