in Türkiye Eyed for UNESCO Heritage Status

 

Continuous excavation and restoration work in Mersin’s ancient port city of Anemurium in Türkiye is aiming for UNESCO World Cultural Heritage status, according to Governor Ali Hamza Pehlivan. Highlighting the city’s historical significance, Pehlivan noted, “We are bringing the living conditions of people from 2,000 years ago to today and tomorrow.”

The ancient city, spanning 600 decares along the Mediterranean coast in Anamur district, is being excavated and restored by a team led by Prof. Dr. Mehmet Tekocak from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and Konya Selçuk University. The year-round efforts include landscaping and the restoration of historical structures such as a bath, an odeon, and a Turkish house.
