Indian Police Block Farmers’ Entry to Delhi Amid Protests

Indian farmers, dissatisfied with unsuccessful negotiations with the government, attempted to march to New Delhi for a protest. Police implemented barricades, including concrete barriers, to prevent their entry. The move caused traffic congestion, station closures, and clashes between farmers and police using pepper gas.

The farmers demand increased state support, a fixed product price, and income doubling. Despite discussions with the government, no agreement has been reached on the base price. In 2021, after a year of protests, Prime Minister Narendra Modi withdrew three contentious agricultural laws, pledging to form a committee for product pricing, which is yet to publish its report.
