Inhumane Conditions Exposed in Damascus Prison

Mezze Prison in Damascus, Syria, has been captured, revealing appalling conditions where prisoners survived on olives and tracked time by scoring walls with pits. Former detainee Hussam Khatip, a 28-year-old university student, described the prison’s inhumane conditions, including 2-square-meter cells packed with 10 people.

Khatip, held in 2016 for WhatsApp messages supporting Assad’s opposition, recounted sleeping while sitting for months and using plastic bottles as toilets. “We took turns sleeping in the fetal position,” he said, describing the torture and dehumanizing treatment he endured during his year-long detention.
