The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS) said on Monday that 1,844 inmates have escaped after gunmen attack on its custodial center in Owerri, the state capital of the southern state of Imo. Gunmen used rocket-propelled grenades, automatic weapons, explosives and rifles to storm the prison. Many of vehicles burnt down and vandalized by the attackers.
A search operation has been launched to recapture the fleeing inmates and attackers.
