Istanbul’s Marmaray Marks 11 Years, Surpasses 1.2 Billion Passengers

Istanbul’s Marmaray rail line, celebrating its 11th anniversary, has transported over 1.2 billion passengers since opening, with 208 million served in just the first 10 months of 2024. The project, connecting Asia and Europe in 4 minutes, now operates 287 daily trips, with extra weekend services. Originally delayed by 4.5 years due to archaeological findings, Marmaray has grown from 9 million passengers in 2013 to 208 million in 2024, becoming a vital part of Istanbul’s transit system. It also supports global trade, having carried nearly 4,000 freight trains across the Bosphorus.
