japanese submarine volcanic eruption threatens marine life

Volcanic ash and rock fragments released by the submarine volcano that erupted in August in Japan covered the sea surface in many parts of the country. Volcanic material, which also hinders tourism and fishing activities, is expected to reach Tokyo’s shores by the end of this month. Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology announced that the volcanic substance that covers the water surface and blocks the sun’s rays poses a danger to marine life. Scientific research institutions across the country have started research to determine how to clean up the volcanic material. It was announced that the Japanese government plans to offer subsidies to fishermen in the affected areas.

The Fukutoku-Okanoba submarine volcano, located off the Ogasawara island chain in the Pacific Ocean, erupted on August 13. The eruption reportedly was one of the largest volcanic events seen in the history of modern Japan.
