WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has been released on bail from Belmarsh prison in England after making a plea agreement with the USA. Assange, 52, who revealed secret US documents, flew out of London yesterday. He is set to appear in court tomorrow in the Northern Mariana Islands, a US territory near Australia, at 09:00 local time.
As part of the deal, Assange will plead guilty to one count of violating US espionage laws and receive a 62-month sentence. Due to his time served in England, he won’t face additional prison time in the US. After the hearing, Assange is expected to return to Australia and reunite with his family. WikiLeaks highlighted his contributions to exposing government corruption and human rights abuses.
