Kahramanmaraş: Then and Now After the Earthquake

Recently unearthed photographs from 15 to 20 years ago showcase the dramatic transformation of Kahramanmaraş city center following a devastating earthquake on February 6. The earthquake, which struck the Mediterranean region, led to significant changes in the city’s landscape. Before the disaster, the city had a population of over a million, with a substantial number evacuating post-earthquake while many returned. The epicenter, marked by over 12,000 heavily damaged buildings, saw a shift in settlement patterns over the past few decades.

Old photographs surfaced online, capturing areas like Trabzon Boulevard and Cyprus Square, alongside hard-hit neighborhoods like Ebrar Sitesi, Hayrullah, and Şazibey. The juxtaposition of old and new images highlights the city’s ongoing recovery and reconstruction efforts. Earthquake survivors expressed mixed sentiments, with Fahri Akkurt emphasizing the need for swift rebuilding and Özgür Kaya noting the drastic changes that have made familiar places unrecognizable.
