King Charles III has arrived in Canada for a two-day visit with Queen Camilla, seen as a symbolic show of support for Canadian sovereignty following controversial remarks by former U.S. President Donald Trump suggesting Canada should become the 51st U.S. state.
Welcomed in Ottawa by Prime Minister Mark Carney and Governor General Mary Simon, Charles is making his first Canadian visit since his coronation. The visit includes official ceremonies, a carriage procession, and a rare address to the Canadian Parliament — the first by a reigning monarch since 1977.
Trump’s recent claims that Canada relies heavily on U.S. subsidies and would be better off annexed have drawn sharp criticism in Canada. In response, PM Carney said, “This visit reflects our identity, our constitutional monarchy, and the enduring strength of our historical ties.” The British press noted the visit signals Canada’s sovereignty and global standing.
