Leader of a Pedophile Jewish Sect Arrested in Guatemala

Yoel Alter, 35, one of the leaders of the ultra-Orthodox Jewish sect Lev Tahor, which was founded in Israel in 1988 and has been committing rape, human trafficking and forced marriage crimes in Mexico and Guatemala since 2014, was arrested in an operation conducted by the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL) in Guatemala and is expected to be extradited to Mexico to stand trial.

Guatemalan police rescued 160 children and 40 women in a raid on the sect in the Santa Rosa region in December 2024. The country’s interior minister, Francisco Jimenez, stated that the children may have been abused by members of the sect.

In 2022, some members of the sect were detained in a police operation in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas, and minors who were rescued in the meantime were handed over to their relatives in Israel. However, the sect members were later released due to lack of evidence.
