Massive fire breaks out in Seoul’s slums, burning 60 houses

A massive fire erupted at 6:27 a.m. local time in Guryong Village, one of the last remaining slums in South Korea’s capital Seoul. More than 900 response personnel, including 290 firefighters, and 10 firefighting helicopters were dispatched to the area, and about 500 people were evacuated. Firefighter officer Shin Yong-ho stated that the fire damaged an area of about 2,700 square meters. At least 60 of approximately 660 houses burned down and the fire was extinguished after 5 hours.

An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the fire.
