The flow of Edirne’s important water resource, the Meriç River, has decreased by nearly 50% in the past month due to rising temperatures and insufficient rainfall. This lack of precipitation has negative consequences for agriculture, humidity levels, and overall water resources, including river flow. Recent measurements indicate a decline in the Meriç River’s flow from 218 cubic meters/second in April to 58 cubic meters/second in May at the Kirişhane measurement station. Similarly, the Tunca River experienced a decrease from 13 cubic meters/second to 11 cubic meters/second during the same period. These rivers, known for flooding in winter and drought in summer, have been affected by increased temperatures and reduced rainfall. Consequently, the lower water levels have exposed islets, stones, and tree stumps in the middle of the river, altering the usual scenic view. Tourists visiting the city, particularly attracted to the historical and tourist spots surrounding the Meriç River, are taken aback by the visible impact of the decreased water levels, leading to contrasting images from their expectations.
