An adult male lion ate its newborn cub at the Tuzoofari zoo in Hidalgo, Mexico. Some children also witnessed the event, which took place in front of the eyes of the visitors at the time the zoo was open. Erica Ortigoza Vasquez, head of the Invictus Foundation, a hospital serving ‘big cats’ in the state of Hidalgo, said that the sad event was caused by the negligence of zoo officials, adding that they filed a complaint with the Federal Environmental Protection Prosecutor’s Office, following the reaction to the incident shared on social media. Vasquez stated that the mother lion and the newborn cub should be kept separately from the father lion for a while for safety reasons, and that the zoo skipped this rule for commercial purposes.
