Mount Etna spews ash and lava

The Etna volcano on the Italian island of Sicily has erupted. Lava reaching up to 10,000 meters illuminated the sky. The lava flows from the southeast crater region, the Italian Institute of Earthquake and Volcanology (IGNV) stated. Officials gave a ‘red code’ as the ashes have become a risk to air traffic in the region, however flights continue at Catania’s Fontanarossa International Airport, which is closest airport to the volcano.

With a height of 3,330 meters, Etna is Europe’s largest and most active volcano.
