The Natural History Museum, which is part of Sivas Cumhuriyet University (SCU), is welcoming visitors. The museum displays around 4,000 items, ranging from geological specimens to fossil specimens, plant specimens to representatives of wetland and terrestrial ecosystems. In the museum, which generally displays examples from the Sivas region, there are also pieces brought from other parts of the country and the world. The Natural History Museum, which opened in 2017, aims to introduce students and the public the examples of geo-diversity and bio-diversity in Sivas and throughout Turkey, as well as to instill a love of nature. The Natural History Museum contains fossils dating back millions of years.
When asked about the museum, SCU Rector Prof. Dr. Alim Yildiz said, “There are 3-4 thousand pieces in our museum. In addition to the rocks, minarets, and sea fossils that are native to Sivas and its region, there are items brought from Antarctica and even from abroad. There are plants, animals, and examples that indicate that Sivas province was once a seabed.” Yildiz stated that their goal was to provide students with information about natural history. “Our goal here is to introduce our museum to students in primary and secondary school. We have a sandbox interactive, for example. Students from elementary and secondary schools can design landforms there ” he stated.
