Protests in Nepal’s capital, Kathmandu, over a government ban on social media left 19 dead and more than 100 injured. The ban, which blocked 26 platforms including Facebook, X, and YouTube, was lifted after mass unrest.
Prime Minister Sharma Oli expressed sorrow, promised compensation for victims’ families, free treatment for the injured, and announced an inquiry within 15 days. Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak resigned, citing moral responsibility. The government said the restrictions aimed to enforce compliance with national laws, not to impose a total ban.
