The death toll in Nepal’s violent protests over last week’s social media ban has risen to 34, with 1,368 injured, according to the Health Ministry.
Police said more than 15,000 prisoners escaped nationwide during the unrest, with Indian border forces capturing dozens who fled into India. Eight prisoners have been killed in clashes with security forces since Tuesday.
The army has been deployed around Parliament in Kathmandu, where a curfew remains in place. The government has lifted the social media ban, but both Prime Minister Khadga Prasad Sharma Oli and Interior Minister Ramesh Lekhak have resigned amid the crisis.
