Turkey’s Mersin city is home to the ancient city of Pompeiopolis. The ancient city, with its colonnaded street, mound, ancient harbor, aqueducts, baths and acropolis, represents one of the world historical heritages and its history dates back to 1500 BC. Excavations in the ancient city, which took place for the 23rd time this year, started in 1999. While studies were carried out to restore the mausoleum of Aratos, one of the most important philosophers of human history, poet, mathematician and founder of astronomy, another structure was found at the bottom of the tomb. The building, which is determined to belong to the Hellenistic period, will be completely unearthed in the next year’s excavations.
