The New Zigana Tunnel on the Trabzon-Gümüşhane highway, hailed as Türkiye’s and Europe’s longest and the world’s third-longest tunnel, has facilitated seamless transportation over the past year since its inauguration, with over 4 million vehicles traversing its route. Commencing construction in April 2016 and officially opening on May 3, 2023, the tunnel has notably improved travel conditions, replacing the hazardous Zigana Passage known for its sharp bends, ramps, and weather-related risks.
Linking the Eastern Black Sea and Caucasus regions to the Middle East and Iran along the Historical Silk Road, the New Zigana Tunnel has significantly reduced travel times, with a distance reduction of around 30 minutes between Gümüşhane and Trabzon. Beyond enhancing travel efficiency, the tunnel’s operation has resulted in substantial time and fuel savings, estimated at over 200 million TL, while also contributing to environmental benefits through reduced carbon emissions.
