North Korea Fires Ballistic Missile Toward East Sea

North Korea fired a ballistic missile toward the East Sea (Sea of Japan), the South Korean military announced, in what is seen as a response to new US sanctions targeting Pyongyang’s weapons program. The missile, launched from North Pyongan Province, fell outside Japan’s exclusive economic zone, according to Tokyo. No damage was reported.

The launch came days after Washington sanctioned two North Korean entities and eight individuals accused of funding the country’s weapons development through cybercrime and money laundering. North Korea had vowed to “respond appropriately” to what it called US hostility.
