Optogenetics Pioneers Win 2026 Medicine Nobel

The 2026 Nobel Prize in Medicine has been awarded to scientists Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann, and Georg Nagel for their groundbreaking discoveries in optogenetics. The trio successfully identified unique light-controlled proteins and used them to manipulate brain activity in live animals. Explaining the technique, the Nobel Committee stated that researchers “managed to trigger a nerve signal” in mice by simply illuminating the targeted cells with blue light. This revolutionary method of controlling neurons is transforming neuroscience, with the committee noting it “is rapidly gaining impact worldwide.” The three laureates currently conduct their research at leading universities across the United States and Germany.
