Peruvian President Pedro Castillo had declared a state of emergency in his address to the nation earlier, announcing the dissolution of the Congress. Eleven ministers resigned after his announcement that the Congress would be dissolved.
Hundreds of Castillo’s supporters and opponents held demonstrations across the country.
