Pope Leo XIV Begins Papacy

Pope Leo XIV officially assumed office with a mass in St. Peter’s Square, attended by around 150,000 people and global leaders including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and US Vice President James David Vance.

In his address, the new Pope urged for “unity, togetherness and fraternity,” stressing the need to face modern challenges while preserving the Church’s legacy. “We still see too much discord, hatred and marginalization,” he said.

As part of the ceremony, Pope Leo XIV received the traditional fisherman’s ring and wool pallium, symbolizing his new pastoral role. Dignitaries from across the world, including leaders from Canada, Australia, Israel, Argentina, Italy, the EU, Germany, and the UK, also attended the event.
