Portugal Battles Three Major Wildfires

Over 1,000 personnel are responding to three major wildfires raging across Portugal. The largest fire is in the Arouca region, north of Lisbon, forcing evacuations and closing the popular Passadicos do Paiva tourist area.

Another fire has been burning since Saturday in the Peneda-Geres National Park near the Spanish border. Smoke has blanketed nearby villages, and Spain has deployed four aircraft to assist. A third fire in Penamacor is advancing toward the village of João Pires. Firefighting efforts are ongoing.
