The death of 10 people as a result of a fire that broke out on Thursday in a quarantined apartment in the Urumqi, China’s Xinjiang, intensified reactions to measures. Demonstrators took to the streets in Beijing and Shanghai to protest the Covid-19 measures, calling on President Xi Jinping and the ruling Communist Party to resign. While some demonstrators carried blank white banners, others lit candles to commemorate the victims of apartment fire. A brawl broke out between the demonstrators and the police.
