Rain Transforms Sea Red on Iran’s Hormuz Island Coast

After morning rainfall, seawater along the Red Coast on Hormuz Island in southern Iran temporarily turned red as iron oxide–rich soil washed into the sea. The rare natural phenomenon, caused by rain and waves mixing the island’s mineral-rich red soil with seawater, drew widespread attention on social media.

The Red Coast is a protected geological site, and experts warn that removing the soil could harm the local ecosystem.
