A ceremony was held in the Sri Lankan parliament yesterday for the newly elected President Ranil Wickremesinghe. Wickremesinghe, 73, took the oath of office before Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya. Wickremesinghe will rule until November 2024, when the mandate of former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who fled the country and resigned in the aftermath of the protests, expires.
Wickremesinghe hopes to reestablish political stability so that he can resume talks with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
