Rare 84-Square-Meter Roman Mosaic Unearthed in Türkiye

An 84-square-meter floor mosaic, believed to date back to the Roman and Early Byzantine periods, has been discovered in Elazığ, Türkiye. The mosaic, depicting various animal species such as lions, deer, Anatolian leopards, and birds, as well as trees and plants, is considered the first of its kind in Türkiye due to its size and intricate geometric patterns. The discovery was made by a local field owner while planting saplings in the village of Salkaya, 14 kilometers from Elazığ’s city center. The Elazığ Museum Directorate and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism have initiated excavation and rescue operations in the area, also uncovering a church and a wine cellar. This mosaic is seen as a significant addition to Turkey’s archaeological heritage.
