Recurring Flooding Hits Silivri, Istanbul

Altınorak housing estate in Silivri, Istanbul, faced a second episode of flooding just two months after the initial incident caused by the overflow of the Kula Stream on November 29, 2023. The region’s roads turned into lakes, affecting predominantly summer houses, prompting citizens to take precautions with sandbags to prevent potential flooding. Municipal teams, employing sewage trucks, worked to address the situation, while a drone captured the water flowing in side streets.

The cancellation of the Çamurlu Creek Hydraulic Project by Istanbul Water and Sewerage Administration (İSKİ) two years ago emerged as a contributing factor to the recurring flooding issue. Frustrated residents expressed concerns over the municipality’s failure to rehabilitate streams, highlighting ongoing challenges in addressing the problem. The postponement of a planned canal construction added to residents’ dissatisfaction, raising questions about potential resolutions as local elections approach.
