Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny’s death in a Russian prison on February 16 has prompted an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his demise. Opposition media organizations have released footage purportedly showing the convoy transporting Navalny’s body from the prison in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Region to the morgue. The images reveal police vehicles and a prison vehicle in the convoy. Navalny’s body was reportedly taken to the morgue at the Regional Clinical Hospital in Salekhard for autopsy.
Russia’s Investigative Committee informed Navalny’s family and lawyers that chemical examinations would delay the body’s return for at least 14 days. Navalny’s supporters have initiated an online petition, amassing over 60,000 signatures, urging the prompt return of his body to the family.
