self-taught turkish chalcographer

Turkish artist Yakup Çetinkaya, 78, who works as a chalcographer in Turkey’s Afyonkarahisar, has been engraving copper for more than 40 years. It takes up to 20,000 hammering to engrave a single landscape for Çetinkaya.

“I took a lot of pictures while I was in art school, and some of my artworks resemble those pictures.  I have been in the business for 64 years. I have made around 500 engraved doors across Turkey. I perform chalcographer for my friend who produces tahini machines. He ships the machines to 60 countries and all over Turkey. I am a self-taught chalcographer, and I wish that the new generation were interested in becoming a chalcographer,” Çetinkaya said.
