Serbia Honors Novi Sad Victims

Tens of thousands gathered in Serbia to honor the 16 victims of the 2024 Novi Sad train station roof collapse with a poignant 16-minute moment of silence. Reflecting a massive political shift in the country, public broadcasters aired the tribute live and displayed the victims’ names on a black screen. The tragedy’s second anniversary follows a historic election victory by the “Student List,” a political movement born from the disaster’s anti-corruption protests. Vowing to hold those responsible accountable, student organizers pledged to continue to “fight for a society where people do not lose their lives due to corruption.” Following their landslide win, the new government has already launched sweeping anti-corruption measures, including police investigations into state institutions and high-level dismissals.
