severe snowfall in Japan disrupts air and land transport

Snowfall in Japan’s northern and western regions caused 48 flights to be canceled and some high-speed train services to be delayed, authorities stated. In the last 24 hours, the snow level in Asago, Hyogo province, reached 71 centimeters, while Hikone, Shiga province, saw a record snowfall of 68 centimeters. Announcing that 90 centimeters of snow is expected in Niigata province and 80 centimeters of snow in Gifu province and Kansai region during the 24-hour period until Tuesday morning, the Japanese Meteorological Agency (JMA) urged citizens to be prepared for disruptions in traffic and power outages.
