Six Killed In Indonesia Protests Over MPs’ Salaries

The death toll in Indonesia’s nationwide protests against parliamentary salary hikes has risen to six. Demonstrations, sparked by reports that lawmakers receive monthly allowances of around $70, have turned violent in Jakarta, Sulawesi, and Java.

Protesters clashed with security forces using stones, sticks, and Molotov cocktails, while police responded with tear gas and water cannons. Schools in Jakarta moved online and civil servants worked from home as the military was deployed.

The UN urged an investigation into alleged excessive force. President Prabowo Subianto warned the unrest must end by sunset.
